The Guy Who Knew Thursday (Second Hand)

·236 words·2 mins

I heard about this one from a guy I used to work with in hospitality.

Gulf side, oil, state company, close to the government people.

No names, no exact country. You know the type.

It wasn’t even at the casino. Some steak place at Wynn, quiet table.

The guy ordered wine but didn’t really drink it.

He had two phones — normal iPhone and a cheap black Android that looked like it cost twenty bucks.

My friend said the ugly one was the real one.

During dinner the black phone buzzed.

He smiled a little and said something like “This will be good news by Thursday.”

It was Monday.

Basically, someone close to him helps decide when the big announcement comes out — production numbers, contracts, the wording the government uses.

They don’t just know the news. They help choose when it drops.

My friend asked him straight if that was insider trading.

The guy laughed and said, “In America, maybe.”

Then something about how in his country the ones who get arrested are the ones they decide to arrest.

My friend stopped drinking after that.

Said the whole conversation felt like oil — sticks to you.

Thursday the news came out exactly the way the guy had hinted.

Crude moved, stocks moved, some people made money.

My friend read it the next morning in his hotel room and just thought, “Ah. That one.”

Nothing dramatic.
